West Ashley Rodent Control

West Ashley is the part of Charleston across the Ashley River from the peninsula, and it is big: more people live here than in most towns in the state, in homes built over several decades.

Around West Ashley

West Ashley, named because it lies west of the Ashley River, is one of the six areas of the city of Charleston, with an estimated 83,996 residents in 2022. It is where Charleston began: English colonists, led there by the Kiawah, made the first permanent settlement in the Carolina colony at Albemarle Point in 1670, and moved it to the peninsula in 1680. That original site is preserved today as Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, 663 acres on Old Towne Rd.

For much of its history the area was farmland and plantations; Sherman’s forces burned Middleton Place in 1865. The Charleston and Savannah Railway reached it in the 19th century. Today Citadel Mall is on Sam Rittenberg Blvd, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is on Henry Tecklenburg Dr, the Bees Ferry West Ashley Library is on Sanders Rd, and Shadowmoss Golf & Country Club is on Dunvegan Dr. West Ashley High School, formed by merging Middleton and St. Andrews high schools, serves the area, and Porter-Gaud School was founded in 1867.

Older crawl spaces near the river

A lot of the area closest to the river was built out after the Second World War, and much of that is ranch homes on crawl spaces, now seventy-odd years into Lowcountry humidity. Those crawl spaces are where we start: open or broken vents, fallen insulation, and gaps around the plumbing where it comes up through the floor. The Ashley River and the tidal creeks that run into it keep the ground damp and give rats cover along the back of a lot of lots, and the newer subdivisions further out have their own weak points where the ductwork and utility lines run under the home.

Why pest control alone does not stop rats

A lot of homeowners call a general pest control company first, which makes sense for insects like termites, roaches and ants. For rats and mice, a pest control plan usually means bait boxes around the exterior of the home and a pest treatment visit on a schedule. Bait can kill some of the animals already on the property, but it does nothing about the opening that lets them into the home, so new ones keep finding the same way in.

Our work is exclusion and crawl space repair, not pest control spraying. On jobs we take over from other pest control companies, the usual miss is an opening nobody checked: a hole the earlier sealing skipped, or a broken or improperly capped drain or vent line. So we inspect the whole home, plumbing included, seal every entry point with stainless steel mesh and concrete, then trap and watch on camera until the activity has stopped. Where the crawl space needs it, we handle moisture control too. A pest control visit that stays outside the home cannot do any of that.

Rat control versus pest management

Pest management and rat control get used as if they mean the same thing, and they do not. Pest management is ongoing: the same pest control treatments come back every month or every quarter, because the pests keep coming back. Rat control done as a repair has an end point, once every way into the home is closed and the cameras show nothing more moving.

If you already have a pest control contract, keep it for the insects it covers. Rats and mice are a separate job, and pest control that only manages them on a schedule is not the same as real control: a home they can no longer get into. Once the openings are sealed, the home stays closed to them whether or not a pest company comes back to re-bait. That protection is what the lifetime warranty on our exclusion work stands behind, in South Carolina the same as everywhere we work.

Our five steps, not a pest control schedule

The same five steps everywhere: a free phone estimate, finding exactly how they are getting in, sealing those openings in steel and mortar, trapping and monitoring what is left inside, then cleaning and sanitizing. No poison and no recurring contract. The exclusion work is a one-time repair backed by our guarantee.

Our North Charleston office at 4986 Wetland Crossing Rd Unit 2317 puts West Ashley a short run away. We also work James Island and Charleston, and the wider North Charleston area.

Fantastic service! I noticed some signs of rodents in my attic and was really concerned. These guys came out quickly and were very thorough in their inspection. They set traps, sealed up potential entry points, and gave me advice on how to prevent future issues. Their team was knowledgeable, friendly, and truly cared about resolving my issue. I'm finally rodent-free thanks to their amazing service. Definitely five stars!

Being near the water in Isle of Palms, we've had rats try to move into our crawl space every year. Normally we just throw down traps, but this time it got worse. We could hear them at night and started finding insulation in our air vents. I found Twin Home Experts through a Facebook group and decided to call. Justin came out and was super professional. He did a full walkthrough and told us what he'd recommend. The whole process was smooth and way more thorough than anything we'd had done before. No more scratching, no more droppings. And they cleaned up after themselves too, which I really appreciated.

We, too, live in a Charleston downtown home that is subject to periodic rodent visits. We contacted this business based on its prior reviews and we were not disappointed. Colton K., an owner of this business, was professional, punctual, thorough and a pleasure to work with. They cleared debris from my crawl space, then sealed it, checked for rodent entry paths and implemented traps with video monitoring. So far, so good! This is a fine young man who has a bright future in Charleston. Hire his team!

We only stay at our Kiawah house a few times a year, so when we came back after a few months and saw signs of rats in the kitchen, we were pretty shocked. They'd gotten into a few cabinets and chewed through some of the pantry items. We called out the twins and had them check everything out. Colton and Jim were awesome. They found where the rats had gotten in through the lattice in our deck and sealed everything up tight. They also set traps and came back to make sure everything was clear before we left. It was such a relief to know the house was secure again.

I recently had the pleasure of using Twin Home Experts after discovering them through a Google search, and I must say, they lived up to their great reviews. I was pleasantly surprised when they were able to schedule a visit for the very next day to investigate the noise I was hearing in the gutters of my three-level home. During the thorough examination of my property, the technician Colton discovered some gaps in the gutter guard that could allow something to get in. He was diligent in his inspection, even going up into the attic to ensure that nothing had made its way inside. Thankfully, he confirmed that nothing had entered my home, and his recommendation was to repair the gutter guard. I would happily recommend them to my family and friends!

After moving into my historic house in Charleston, I discovered signs of rodents in the attic. Twin Home Experts were prompt, professional, and so knowledgeable about how to handle older homes. They removed the infestation, replaced the damaged insulation, and left everything spotless. It's rare to find a company that truly takes pride in their work - these guys do.

Living near the beach out in Folly, we get a fair amount of critters, but when rats made their way into our attic, we knew we needed help. It was starting to smell, and we didn't want it to turn into a bigger issue. Twin Home Experts came out fast, and they were great from the start. Kameron was super knowledgeable and showed us pictures and videos of everything he found. The guys that came out closed up where they were getting in and removed the ones that were caught quick before they started to smell. 100% recommend this company to anyone with a rat problem!

I'm a homeowner in Mount Pleasant and had a pretty serious rodent issue last fall. We thought we had sealed up all the entry points ourselves, but the scratching kept coming back, mostly at night in the ceiling above our bedroom. After a few sleepless weeks, we called Twin Home Experts. What I appreciated was that they didn't come in trying to sell us on a million things. They simply did a detailed inspection, explained what was really happening, and got to work. They stopped by today to check in because they were in the area and it's been months since we've had any issues. That just shows how thorough these guys are.

FAQ

Common questions before you call

Do you charge extra to come out here?

No. West Ashley is inside our normal Charleston service area, and the phone estimate is free here like anywhere else.

How fast can you get to my home?

Our Charleston team covers this side of the river, and we hold 24/7 availability for emergencies. For a specific appointment window, call and ask, we would rather give you a real time than a slogan.

Is this a recurring contract like pest control?

No. The crawl space work is a repair to your home, and the rodent exclusion is a one-time repair backed by the money-back guarantee. Neither is a monthly pest control treatment you keep paying for.
