Why cleanup is not optional
An established infestation leaves contamination behind in the insulation, on the framing and in the ducting, and it does not stop being a problem when the rodents are gone. It is a sanitation issue, and in a crawl space or attic it sits directly in the path of air moving through your house.
It is also a re-infestation risk. The scent left by a previous population is an attractant, so a building that has been cleared and sealed but not cleaned is a more appealing target than a neutral one.

What the work involves
Contaminated material is removed rather than treated in place: soiled insulation, nesting material and droppings all come out and are bagged and disposed of. Where ducting has been contaminated it gets addressed rather than left.
The space is then disinfected and deodorized, which deals with both the sanitation problem and the scent that would otherwise mark the building as somewhere worth returning to.
New insulation goes back in afterwards, and the exclusion work that stops it happening again is part of the same scope. All of it is priced at the inspection, so the job does not grow halfway through.

Can I clean it up myself?
We would rather you did not disturb it. Dried droppings and nesting material become airborne when they are swept or vacuumed with ordinary equipment, and a crawl space or attic is a confined space to be doing that in. If you are going to, at minimum do not dry-sweep it.
Is the smell going to go away?
Once the contaminated material is out and the space is treated, yes. Where the smell persists after cleanup it usually means there is contaminated material still in place somewhere - inside a wall cavity or in ducting - and that is worth finding rather than covering.
Is this included with the rodent work or separate?
