Insulation Replacement in Charleston, SC
Insulation that is wet, fallen or fouled is not insulating anything. It comes out, the cause gets fixed, and then new material goes in.
Why it failed
Two causes account for nearly all of it here. The first is moisture: fibreglass batts absorb it, get heavy, lose their loft and drop out of the floor joists, and once they are wet they hold that water against the subfloor rather than protecting it.
The second is rodents. Insulation is ideal nesting material - warm, easy to tunnel through and undisturbed - and once it has been nested in and soiled, it is a contamination issue as much as a thermal one.
Both causes matter more than the insulation itself, because replacing the material without addressing them just buys a couple of years. That is the order we work in: find the cause, fix it, then replace.
What replacement involves
The old material comes out and is bagged and removed rather than left in the crawl space. Where it has been fouled by rodents, the space underneath it gets cleaned and disinfected before anything new goes in.
The cause gets dealt with in the same visit: the moisture source, the entry points, or both. This is where the other services overlap, and it is why they are priced as one job.
New insulation is then fitted and secured properly so it stays up. In an encapsulated crawl space the right approach is often to insulate the foundation walls rather than the floor system, because the space itself is now inside the building envelope. Insulation Replacement: common questions
Can you just add new insulation on top of the old?
No, not where the old material is wet or contaminated. You would be trapping moisture and contamination against your subfloor and hiding it. It comes out first.
Will this lower my power bill?
It should help, and an uninsulated or fallen-out floor system is a genuine loss. We do not put a figure on it though, because the honest answer depends on your house, your system and how you use it, and any specific percentage we quoted you would be a guess.
Do you do attic insulation too, or only crawl spaces?
Both. Attics have the same two failure modes here, moisture and rodents, and the same order of operations applies: find the cause, fix it, then replace the material.
