How the removal is done
The work area is contained before anything is disturbed, because disturbing growth releases spores and the point of containment is that they do not travel into the rest of the house.
Non-salvageable material comes out: affected insulation, and porous material that cannot be treated back to a sound condition. Structural timber is treated where it is sound and identified for repair where it is not.
The space is then cleaned and treated, and the moisture source is fixed as part of the same job rather than quoted separately afterwards. You get the whole scope at the inspection, in writing, before any work begins.

Do you test the mold?
Tell us at the inspection what you need. Testing identifies species and is worth doing where there is a health question or a real-estate transaction involved. For a straightforward damp crawl space with visible growth, the moisture source is the thing that determines the work, not the species.
Is the mold in my crawl space affecting the air upstairs?
It can, and in a raised house it often does. Air moves upward through a building, so the crawl space is effectively supplying air to the rooms above it. That is the mechanism behind the musty smell people notice on the ground floor without being able to find a source for it.
Can I stay in the house while you work?
In most crawl space jobs, yes. The work area is contained and the access is from outside or from a hatch. Where the affected area is inside the living space we will tell you in advance what to expect.
