Two species get into homes, and they behave differently enough that treating them the same wastes your money. The roof rat is a climber. It travels along fence lines, utility lines and tree limbs, and it enters near the top of a building: the roofline, the eaves, an unscreened attic or gable vent. The Norway rat is a burrower. Rat Control: common questions
I only hear it at night. Is that normal?
Yes, and it is the most common way people find out. Rats are most active from dusk into the early night, which is when the house is quiet enough to hear them moving. Hearing them only at night does not mean it is a small problem.
Can I just set traps myself?
You can, and you will probably catch some. The reason it comes back is that trapping removes the animals and changes nothing about the building. Until the entry points are sealed, you are removing this month's rats and leaving the door open for next month's.
Will you have to cut into my walls?
Usually not. Most of this work happens in the attic, the crawl space and along the exterior. If rats are nesting in a wall cavity we will tell you before anything is opened, and why.
